This patchwork top was created as part of a unit during my HNC textiles course. The task was to design a collection of patchwork tops and then create one final piece, reusing secondhand and unwanted fabrics or materials. The idea was to use sustainable methods of designing and creating to highlight the impact that fast fashion has had on the planet. Part of the project was to research patchwork designers as well as the traditional Japanese embroidery and mending methods of born and sashiko stitching to inspire our designs. I was inspired by the quilt designer Russell Barratt and the clothing designer David Black/ House of Black who both use secondhand clothing and fabrics to create their designs. I used a range of secondhand clothing, old bedsheets and scrap fabrics to create my design and was inspired by spring time flowers which I explored through my colour pallette of pastel pinks, yellows and greens.
